ACUPUNCTURE – SOUNDS PAINFUL…IS IT? SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED FOR YOU.

Renee shares with us some of the most common things she is asked about Acupuncture.

Common questions about acupuncture

Acupuncture is a whole system of medicine, originating in ancient China about 3,500 years ago. It involves insertion of needles into the body at specific locations to correct imbalances in the flow of energy in the body. I get asked many questions about acupuncture, and the following addresses the three most common questions I receive from patients and physicians.

Does acupuncture hurt? Without a doubt, the most popular question asked! For the needle phobic, it is the first question. But, don’t let the idea of needles put you off – most patients barely feel a thing as the needles go in. Acupuncture is different to receiving a medical injection, as the needles used are very fine (about a thickness of a hair). While each person experiences acupuncture differently, most people feel only a minimal sensation or discomfort as the needles are inserted. Once the needles are inserted, patients report that they experience a feeling of relaxation and well-being that lasts well beyond the treatment time.

Is acupuncture safe? Yes, acupuncture is safe when administered by a qualified, registered practitioner. Needles are sterile and only used once. Adverse reactions reported worldwide are low, and the most common side effects are minor, such as spot bleeding or bruising. If we compare this to common side effects of conventional drugs, such as nausea and vomiting, acupuncture is a safe and effective choice.

How does acupuncture work? The mechanisms of acupuncture are not yet well understood. Acupuncture is thought to affect neurotransmitters, hormone levels, the immune system and other body systems. Research has shown that acupuncture increases endorphin output, which blocks pain sensations but can also affect mood, appetite and sex hormones. Perhaps the therapeutic benefit of acupuncture may result from a number of biological processes occurring simultaneously.
